This wild orchid was found in early May in a meadow near Bamberg/Upper Franconia (northern Bavaria). The small orchid used to be widespread and common throughout Germany. Today, this wild orchid species has become rather rare, its populations are declining and in many places it is threatened with extinction. Its habitat ranges from sea level to the montane zone. The flowers appear in all shades from white to dark purple. The helmet-shaped perianth has green veins. Pollination is carried out by bumblebees and bees. With an average height of 10 to 30 cm (maximum up to 50 cm), the plant grows on nutrient-poor grasslands, on dry to moderately moist meadows and pastures, mainly on alkaline soils, but also on lime-free loam and clay soils, provided these are sufficiently low in nitrogen.
