Yuan-Hao Cheng, master of Department of Life Sciences, National Chung Hsing University, and Dr. Tsung-Yu Aleck Yang, researcher of National Museum of Natural Science, conducted detailed and comprehensive morphological study on Clematis subsection Pierotianae native to Taiwan. In 2020, Cheng and his research partners discovered a Clematis population in Yangmingshan resembling C. parviloba subsp. bartlettii, which typically grow at mid-to-high altitude. However, after comparing collected specimens, they found the two species are distinguishable by stamen number and morphology. Therefore, they published it as a new subspecies of C. parviloba. The new subspecies, C. parviloba subsp. shengzhenii was named after Cheng’s Taxonomy mentor Dr. Sheng-Ren Yang. The reference plant of this artwork is a lovely flowering stem cutting from Billy Tam (Kwok-Yuk Tam).
