Sophie Crossart is a Dutch representational artist whose work is inspired by the natural world and a deep appreciation of its subtle forms.

Working directly from nature, she isolates elements through close observation and translates them into highly detailed watercolour paintings on paper and vellum. Her process is careful and deliberate, allowing each piece to develop layer by layer, reflecting the slow cycle of growth found in nature.

Sophie’s work is rooted in a long tradition of painting nature and draws connections between historical techniques and contemporary practice. The use of vellum, a material once central to early image-making, reflects her engagement with fragility and preservation, and the long tradition of human craft and making art.

Alongside her botanical works, she paints intimate still lifes in oil on panel, focusing on modest, often overlooked subjects. These works encourage sustained looking and a renewed attention to the ordinary.

Through her practice, Sophie seeks not only to depict nature, but to reflect on the act of seeing, offering viewers a moment of stillness and wonder in an increasingly accelerated world.

Sophie is a Dutch fine artist and educator. She holds degrees in Art History from the Netherlands and Germany (B.A. & M.A.), and a Ph.D. from Munich. Her academic research in the historical representation of everyday life and the natural world informs her broader artistic practice.

She teaches botanical and observational painting to an international student base through online courses and workshops.

Her work is held in private collections internationally and has been shown in selected exhibitions and art fairs across Northern Europe. She is open to commissions and collaborative projects.
