In Korea, the Rhododendron schlippenbachii Maxim. is a cultural icon of resilience. My practice is anchored in three principles: actual life-size, long-term observation, and the unaltered field state. Since childhood, climbing mountains with my father, I have been captivated by the Royal Azalea, whose petals fluttered like butterflies in the breeze. Through years of observation, I documented its unique biological rhythm and distinctive winter buds. I was fascinated by the silvery pubescence protecting these buds, capturing the structural promise of new life. Using watercolor pencils, I traced each fine hair and the intricate veins of the leaves that gracefully curl backward. Facing the subject in its true size is more than a technique; it is a sincere record of a life that perseveres—a tribute to the strong vitality shared by all things that breathe and eventually fade.

Kinship of the Flesh My practice is anchored in three principles: actual life-size, long-term observation, and the unaltered field state. Initially captured by the radiant presence of the Strelitzia reginae (Bird of Paradise), I soon realized it was a distinct living entity aging alongside me. As a human bound by time, I felt a deep kinship in the flower’s once-haughty petals as they bore the indelible etchings of passing years. Rather than compressing its immense scale, I focused on the essential distillation of its life cycle, documenting the parched, wrinkling textures with watercolor pencils and a water brush. Confronting the subject in its true magnitude is an authentic chronicle of a fellow living being—a testament to the shared vulnerability of all things that breathe and eventually fade.
