Watercolour on Rory McEwen Vellum

h: 15 w: 15 d: 2 (cms).

I created this work during my 2023 residency at Oak Spring Garden Foundation, fortunate to be there in peak spring among the stunning bulbs and ephemerals curated from Rachel “Bunny” Mellon’s legacy. Artist Susannah Blaxill generously gifted me Rory McEwen vellum, inspiring me to paint the intricate tessellated tepals of Fritillaria meleagris, a genus Rory loved. During my five-week residency, I enjoyed uninterrupted creative time in the sunroom, visited by wildlife and fellow botanical artists Beverly Allen, Carol Woodin, and Jean Emmons. I completed the painting after returning to Australia, timing it with the southern winter bloom. Working on gessoed vellum was challenging, requiring careful sanding with fine jeweller’s sandpaper, a tip from colleague Mali Moir.
