In this watercolor piece featuring the rare Clathrus ruber, my goal was to capture its ephemeral, almost alien beauty and intricate latticework. I also wanted to illustrate its miraculous emergence into the world—a truly incredible creation of nature. I focused on rendering the complex textures and the stark contrast between the vibrant red 'cage' and the rough, grey protective peridium from which it sprouts. The painting is executed on 100% cotton Sanders Waterford paper by St Cuthberts Mill (300gsm, Hot Pressed).

This watercolor painting of Clathrus archeri is a personal exploration of nature's dramatic cycle. My aim was to capture its unique lifecycle, from the emerging red tentacles breaking through the protective peridium to the fully unfurled, vibrant red arms with dark gleba. I meticulously focused on textures: smooth red arms, dark mucus and the detailed form of the bird skull nestled at its base, integrated as part of its ecosystem context.
