Arundina graminifolia is a ground orchid native to the Philippines and other parts of tropical and subtropical Asia, and is a prolific bloomer. Its purplish-magenta flowers shimmer in bright light, offering a striking contrast to the clean, upright lines of its grass-like leaves and stems. Unlike the flowers of epiphytic orchids, each individual bloom is short-lived. Spotting this fruiting specimen at a resort garden made it impossible not to revisit this subject, this time to capture the full cycle: tight buds, an open flower, and a developing fruit, all on one stem.

Artwork story: Dillenia luzoniensis is endemic to the Philippines, and a reliable year-round bloomer in my garden. Its bright yellow petals frame a bold red center that bees find irresistible. The petals are so delicate that they are nearly always wilted by noon. What keeps this subject worth revisiting is the sheer variety on the plant at any given moment: the deep, leathery green of mature leaves alongside the almost luminous green of new growth, with buds, blooms and open fruit often coexisting on the same branches.
