This piece is a tribute to the remarkable flowers that bloom in February, a time of year that has taken on new significance since my move to Germany. Having grown up in Australia, I continue to be struck by the stark contrast in seasons here. Just when it feels as though warmth may never return, nature offers a quiet yet powerful reminder that spring is on its way. Despite the grey skies, persistent rain, and lingering cold, these blooms find the strength to emerge. Snowdrops, crocuses, and nodding hellebores seem to carry a quiet wisdom, appearing as if they know something we don’t, that light and warmth are near. Their resilience inspired me to create a piece full of colour and contrast. The bold blue shadow contrasts the brilliance of the yellow and purple crocuses, while the leopard-print spots on the white Hellebore add drama and intrigue to the composition. This painting celebrates that fleeting yet hopeful moment when winter begins to loosen its grip.

Curcuma

Curcuma longa - Hidden in the soil under these striking hot pink flowers is the golden root used to make Turmeric spice. There are 100 different species of Curcuma (the genus belonging to the ginger family). Some of these plants are used as food and dyes, while others are purely ornamental. Turmeric has long been valued in Asian cultures for both its medicinal properties and for giving curry its rich golden colour. While painting this flower I became immersed its exotic structure. Initially you’re drawn to the dramatic pink blooms, however if you look closely there’s a surprise hidden in the glossy layered bracts below. Small violet flowers emerge from each bract, poking out their heads, waving from their little windows.
