I was wanting to paint a pineapple for so long. I did not want to paint just the fruit but rather the plant as a whole. This particular caynne pineapple, is used mainly for canning and juicing as it has a less sweet flavour than the Queen pineapples. The fruit start out a light pinkish purple colour, then turn a dark purple blue before finally ripening to a golden Yellow colour. The colours are what attracted me from when the plant is only just forming to when it is mature, the leaves are also the most delicious shades of green and red.

This was one plant I just had to paint. I loved the colours of this beautiful plant, the way it has the green hues then all the shades of pink and white with the flowers, that then develope into the full bodied juicy deep colours when the fruit ripens. The leaves are also so colourful depending on how fresh they are. I loved showing this as well as the yellow as the leaf dies. This plant is Endemic to the Cape in South Africa. It’s an aquatic herb, which has been brought back into cultivation as a food crop during the past twenty years.
