This work was created for the Botanica Scotia exhibition held as part of Botanical Art Worldwide 2025, which focused on heritage crops. The work was exhibited in Edinburgh, and at the V&A in Dundee. Mr Little's Yetholm Gypsy is a distinctive heritage potato, which uniquely shows flashes of three colours in unusual random swirling on its skin: pale golden, light pink and deep purple. Its name denotes its historical connection to its original community, the Yetholm area in the Scottish Borders, which was a stronghold of Romany gypsies for centuries. Thought to be introduced in around 1899, it is also named after the late Mr Little whose family was given the tubers at a local horse fair in the 1940s, and kept the variety going for 50 years. It now owes its survival to Scotland’s potato expert, Alan Romans, who in 1998 through his microplants project cleaned and re-introduced the variety on a small scale.

This is a painting of the seed pod of the gorgeous yellow-flowered Delavay peony, an autumn subject from our Scottish garden. Our tree peony has been generously scattered its big glossy black seeds for many years now, and we regularly discover an extra peony has sprouted, and either has to be found another spot in the garden, or must be potted up and found a new home elsewhere. Whilst I’ve not yet managed to paint this tree peony in flower, as its flowers are so transient, its the seed pod made a lovely subject. The subject is painted x 1.5 life size.
