I was inspired to paint this piece after my mother experienced a serious health issue. The dried daffodils on my desk, past their prime, symbolise the natural cycle of life. Their withered petals just like the wrinkles on one’s face; they are the marks of time, the imprints left by life. Though imperfect, they are utterly real. Painting them became an act of hope, and an observation of fleeting nature.

These exotic-looking flowers are not commonly found in my local area. Native to northern Africa and southern Europe, the Arabian starflower has creamy white, star-shaped blossoms with dark green centers that transform into beautiful blooms with an intricate, ball-like appearance. This painting marks my first attempt at such a large-scale watercolor painting. For me, the most interesting part is showing the cross-section of the flower head, which reveals the secret of the striking inflorescence.
