The work was created from September to March. I was drawn not to the shape of the cob, but to the flowing “locks” of its husk and the play of light and color. The image emerged from a chance encounter with the subject, striking me with its almost unreal beauty. It evoked associations with Galadriel from The Lord of the Rings — delicate, luminous, and seemingly elven. I began with a graphic sketch, then spent a long time selecting pigments and making color tests to capture subtle shifts of light and tone. The focus shifts from the kernels to the husk, revealing the character of the form through movement and rhythm. This is an attempt to capture a moment when a familiar object suddenly appears as something unique and animated.

For a very special project to detail the plant life of Fullers Mill Garden, Suffolk, the abundant Astrantia major Great masterwort, or Hattie's pincushion, made this the perfect subject for my artwork. As one of the various contributors to a book celebrating this wonderful garden, it has been an honour to be involved in the project. The main watercolour is a bird's eye view of the plant with the pollinator on the side. Due to how small these flowers are, there is magnification on the watercolour and details of the plant of its actual size in graphite. The key pollinator is Volucella pellucens Pellucid hoverfly. This work is double mounted in off-white and protected in a transparent protective sleeve. The full size of the work (mounted) is 57x45cm. Please contact for further pictures or information.

As the hot, dry Western Cape summer draws to a close, the sight of the first spathes of Amaryllis belladonna emerging from among its dry leaves fills me with excitement. This heralds the start of the winter rainfall season with the promise of floriferous geophytes. Their fragrant, delicate pink blooms, bring back memories of the farmhouse garden where I grew up, and from where some of the magnificent decades old bulbs, originate. The flowers are pollinated by moths. The plant’s strap-like leaves appear only during the winter months, dying back in summer when the bulb becomes dormant—a remarkable survival strategy known as hysteranthy. The composition of this painting is based on the golden rectangle with one of the stems following the diagonal line. Within the proportional division, the flowers fill the upper rectangle. With the rectangle inverted, the bud lies on the intersecting line between the smaller square and rectangle.

I was drawn to this majestic, palm-like cycad—one of the oldest living plant lineages on Earth. Endemic to South Africa and classified as Vulnerable, it embodies both strength and fragility. Its ancient presence and powerful structure deeply captivated me. Knowing its status on the Red Data List gave me a profound sense of urgency to preserve its image through art. In this work, I sought to capture the striking form of its leaves, their subtle shifts in colour, and the fallen, withered ones beneath. The intricate textures of the trunk tell the enduring story of this remarkable plant.

After lying dormant through summer, this winter-growing geophyte flourishes in seasonal ponds and vleis. As autumn and winter rains fill seasonal ponds, oval leaves quickly spread across the surface. A member of one of the more primitive plant families, it produces fragrant, forked inflorescence with tiny white, single-petalled flowers and prominent anthers. The delicate blooms rise above the water during flowering, but once pollinated, the flowers sink below the surface as seeds begin to form—a fascinating transformation, and one that proved particularly challenging to capture compositionally. About four seeds develop per follicle; once the seedhead is mature, it’s ready to harvest. A delicious traditional Cape stew, waterblommetjiebredie, is made with the fruit, mutton, onions, wine, and tart sorrel. This painting depicts the plant’s life cycle using a golden rectangle (Fibonacci spiral) composition, with flowers at key intersections. The focus is the largely submerged fruit.

Pastel pencils, soft pastel

This piece is a detailed drawing of a magnificent Malus paradasiaca specie in combination with a dried, skeletal leaf, created with pastel pencils and soft pastel Panpastel on pastelmat paper 360 gsm. Every time I draw I usually try to add a touch of humor to each drawing, to depict not just botanical accuracy but to tell a story behind the story. So, when I saw the composition in real life on a tree, I had a clear vision of apples, dancing waltz with the dried leaf! I was fascinated by semi ruined dried leaf, it’s fragility and beauty, and the way it was visually embracing the tiny apples, as if comforting them and protecting them from bad weather. My drawing technique used was multiple layering of pastel pencils pigment to create the baseline of the drawing, distinguish highlights and shadow areas, with the base layer of soft pastel, with further blending techniques and precise detailing. Drawing like that required meticulous approach, great patience and long hours to complete.

Watercolor
h: 41 w: 31 d: 1 (cms).
This botanical watercolor illustration depicts Muscari with a ladybird, rendered with close attention to botanical accuracy and natural detail. The work is created using professional watercolor on high-quality cotton paper, allowing for delicate layering, transparency, and subtle tonal transitions. The composition focuses on the vertical rhythm of the inflorescence, capturing the unique structure of each bell-shaped floret. The addition of the ladybird introduces a narrative element and highlights the natural relationship between plant and insect, enhancing the sense of scale and liveliness. The color palette emphasizes variations of violet and blue tones, contrasted by the warm red of the ladybird, creating a balanced and harmonious visual accent. This piece reflects my ongoing exploration of botanical subjects through careful observation, combining scientific precision with an artistic interpretation of form, light, and texture.

Syzygium Myrt folium is familiar in our tropism area. In my architectures project, this plant usually plants as a fence. It functional as boundaries between in outside and inside of the site area. We also can find these plants mostly in the main road of the big city in Indonesia, especially Jakarta. So, it so closes to be potential botanical drawing object. It easy to be seen and interesting to draw because it seems to be challenging.

Cold porcelain clay sculpture finished with Oil paints
h: 40 w: 18 d: 18 (cms).
This work draws from the Blue columbine plant (Aquilegia Caerulea), which is defined by its distinctive backward-extending nectar spurs and nodding floral structure. The sculpture shows a single bloom, allowing its morphology to be observed without distraction. Hand-sculpted in cold porcelain, the petals are formed at minimal thickness to capture the translucency and delicacy of the living plant. Set on a slender stem within a restrained base, the composition gives spatial breathing. The piece is a true form of botanical study with the most accurate bloom structure, its subtly colored stem, and its delicate leaves.

This artwork is a detailed realistic drawing of a bunch of garden tulips, framed by imitation of realistically drawn passe-partout. I bought these tulips from an old lady at the street once, the flowers were garden grown, but not that fancy-looking, so that was the exact moment I got the idea that being combined with the proper framing even an ordinary-looking specie can become something special. For this piece I’ve used the complex combination of soft pastel Panpastel, as the base layer and various brands of pastel pencils to create the main body of the drawing, establishing the color scheme ang attracting additional attention to detail. After pastel base was done I could add colored pencil details to sharpen the edges, highlight some particular spots and to fix pastel pigment. From my experience, thoughtful combination of these mediums on pastelmat sanded pastel paper 360 gsm helps to add extra realism to depiction, provide needed vibrance and visually reveal the textures.

Pennisetum glaucum is a resilient cereal crop adapted to extreme temperatures, low rainfall, and nutrient-poor soils, making it vital in marginal environments. This work explores the plant through a split composition, presenting its structural extremes as interconnected parts. The flowering head is rendered in detail, while the opposing axis traces the plant downward into its root system, emphasizing both reproductive form and subterranean resilience. By separating yet aligning these elements, the drawing reflects on the relationship between what is visible above ground and the hidden systems that sustain it.

Colour pencils and Graphite
h: 43 w: 34 d: 1 (cms).
This work documents two distinct floral morphs observed across separate habitats in the Nilgiri Hills of the Western Ghats, revealing subtle morphological variation within the species. By combining color and graphite, the composition isolates and compares these forms, emphasizing shifts in structure, surface, and depth. The drawing reflects on how variation emerges across environments, often unnoticed in passing observation.

Gouache on black paper
h: 68 w: 48 d: 1 (cms).
This work is dedicated to the beauty of irises grown in my own garden. Each flower is depicted with careful attention to its individual character, form, and color. The irises appear as living beings—delicate, yet filled with inner strength and dignity. The contrast between the deep black background and the vibrant hues of the petals enhances the sense of light, as if it radiates from within the flowers themselves. The piece is executed in gouache on black paper, allowing for a rich depth of color and a subtle shimmering effect. Through layered application and delicate tonal transitions, a sense of space and air is created. This composition reflects on the beauty of fleeting moments, the quiet of the garden, and the ability of art to suspend time, preserving fragile instants of life.

Watercolor on paper

This magnificent flower is from the greenhouse of the Peter the Great Botanical Garden in St. Petersburg. I started drawing it back in October 2024, but unfortunately I was never able to continue working on it. I am very happy to present it to the audience after two months of continuous work. The painting is made in watercolors on paper with a density of 640 g/m. I'm glad I was able to finish it in time for Plante 2026.

Watercolour on paper

The prickly pear cactus, known as 'sabr' in Arabic, holds deep cultural and symbolic significance in Palestine. The word 'sabr' means patience and resilience, reflecting the enduring spirit of the Palestinian people. Traditionally planted around villages and homes as natural fences, the deep roots of prickly pear enable the plants to regrow, long after the villages have disappeared. These prickly hedges become living markers of memory, belonging, and connection to the land. The fruit itself, sweet but protected by sharp thorns, is also seen as a metaphor for strength through hardship, symbolising the idea that perseverance through difficulty can lead to sweetness and survival.
