Supernova is a large charcoal drawing that captures the elegant structure and natural geometry of one of Britain’s most iconic wildflowers. Hand-drawn using charcoal and Conté Pierre Noire, this detailed monochrome artwork highlights the striking patterns at the heart of the oxeye daisy — from its spiralling centre to the perfectly balanced arrangement of its petals.

Lady’s Slipper is an orchid of the genus Paphiopedilum, whose name refers to the myth of Aphrodite and her sandal, said to have been lost during a walk and transformed, according to legend, into an exquisite flower. The form of this plant is an example of natural architecture, where aesthetics and engineering precision exist in inseparable unity. Its characteristic “slipper” is a complex pollination system: an insect, attracted by color and texture, enters the pouch and can leave only through a narrow, guided passage, brushing against the pollen in the process. Thus, beauty becomes a mechanism for the continuation of life.

The walnut is an ancient tree. The first reliable evidence of walnut cultivation dates back to Babylon (now Iraq) around 2000 BC. Walnut wood is one of the most prized timbers in the world due to its physical, mechanical, and aesthetic characteristics. In Italy, the walnut is considered a noble tree not only for its fruit but also for the value of its timber. In fact, in the past, planting a walnut tree at the birth of a child meant providing a dowry for her/his future. Furthermore, the walnut husk, in addition to being used to make nocino (a liqueur made from walnut), is used dry in natural fabric dyes. Thanks to its high tannin content, it can produce a brown dye.

At the centre of this work is a dry goatbeard flower merged with a seashell — a symbolic fusion of the organic and the mineral, of life and memory. The composition reflects the state of being “between worlds,” where nature, time, and perception intersect. In the stillness of the dead bloom and the spiral of the shell lies a search for harmony amid instability. The piece explores how botanical forms can act as ritual carriers of meaning in a modern world constantly shifting and crossing boundaries of the known. It is made on special, high-quality 100% cotton paper Sanders Waterford and has a density of 300 grams/meter.

Telti-Kuruk Grapes" — an artwork that participated in the exhibition and international project Botanical Art Worldwide 2025 representing Ukraine. Telti-Kuruk is an autochthonous grape variety native to Ukraine, cultivated on the territory of modern Ukraine since the 15th–16th centuries. It survived the largest phylloxera epidemic in Europe as well as the destruction of vineyards during the Prohibition period in the USSR. Today, this variety is cultivated by a single local winery and has become its distinctive signature. As a botanical artist, I was delighted to contribute to the popularization of this variety, as these grape clusters hold not only varietal value but visual beauty as well. Painting a white grape variety on white paper is a particularly engaging creative challenge.

Corn is a fiery and passionate character. The dynamic movement of its leaves, the eccentric hairstyle, and the sweet, juicy kernels—all play out against a backdrop of contrasting textures: glossy shine versus matte fragility. Perhaps one must be an artist or a poet to see the spirit of a flamenco dancer in a corn husk. But try to look at this plant through my eyes, and feel what the artist feels when sensing the potential for a new story.

Eucalyptus flowers open not through petals but through a multitude of fine stamens that create a complex, almost explosive form. Within this structure lies the natural energy of growth — the moment when the protective cap releases, revealing the plant’s inner architecture. Shown alongside buds and fruit, it reflects different stages of a single process: from formation to full expression.

h: 34 w: 26 d: 1 (cms).
This graphite piece is based on a pot of three varieties of basil which I grew, Amazel, Dark Opal & Genovese basil. I loved the various textures and the range of values that this mix offered visually. Not only were each of these basils flavourful when used in cooking, they also smelt delightful in my studio! This piece was completed on Strathmore Bristol vellum using Caran D’Ache grafwoods (4H to 8B) and Blackwing pencils. My drawing & graphite work, prior to becoming involved in botanical art, relied solely on the typical HB pencil used in school.

The snail-like gemmae of Tectaria gemmifera, bearing tiny plantlets on its living fronds, fascinate me. Through this artwork, I want to share the wonder of how its new life unfolds. This piece offers a modern take on classical botanical art, blending traditional drawing techniques with a contemporary minimalist composition. This intricate pen drawing is rendered on a full deckled-edge 640gsm Arches 100% cotton hot-pressed paper sheet. It was drawn with black archival-quality Sakura Pigma Micron pens in a range of nib sizes, using the stippling technique. Rendered at approximately three times life size, the drawing magnifies the snail fern's unique characteristics and aims to capture the beautiful silver-like sheen of its unfurling leaves in monotone, evoking the classic feel of old engravings. This botanical artwork stems from my personal connection with the plant, which is native to Southern Africa and sourced from my mother’s garden.

This botanical graphite drawing captures the quiet strength and intricate structure of a pine cone. I was fascinated by its architectural rhythm — layer upon layer of protective scales, each carrying the memory of growth and time. Working in graphite allowed me to focus on tonal depth, texture, and the subtle play of light and shadow. The pine cone becomes more than a natural object — it transforms into a symbol of resilience, preservation, and the silent continuity of life. This artwork is part of my ongoing exploration of botanical forms as living witnesses of fragility and endurance. Through careful observation and slow drawing, I aim to reveal the dignity and quiet beauty of natural structures that are often overlooked.

I was privileged to have been given permission and great support from the Christie family to study the Rhododendron Collection at Blackhills Garden in Moray. Rhododendron sinogrande, The Great Chinese Rhododendron, studying this plant has been one of the most amazing challenges. The sheer scale with its grand architectural foliage reaching up to over 70cm in length the largest leaves in the genus with a dark green shiny rugulose upper surface contrasting with the beautiful silvery to fawn agglutinated indumentum on the lower surface. My first visit to the plant was whilst in bud, astounded by the beautiful large dramatic sculptural buds, I studied every stage of the life cycle, intrigued by the details, the bell shaped campanulate flowers, the colours, the indumentum, the tomentum on the ovary, seed capsules and the tiny seeds themselves. Building layers of graphite to show form, texture and detail to hopefully capture that dramatic moment I first discovered this species.

Early European botanists were amazed by the Southern Magnolia. When the tree reached Britain in the early 1700s, it became a symbol of exotic beauty. The first specimens were carefully grown in tubs with scaffolding so gardeners could propagate their branches, and each plant was so prized that it sold for five guineas. A fortune at the time!

The composition is built on the interplay between pale flowers and richly coloured green foliage, which creates depth and intensifies the presence of the petals. The tones of the flowers vary according to their stage of development: younger blooms appear lighter and more translucent, while more mature ones develop deeper pink and burgundy accents in the central area, forming the characteristic orchid-like quality of this azalea. The gently undulating edges of the petals and the transparency of the watercolour layers convey the delicate structure of the flowers.

The flexible stem of Humulus lupulus establishes the direction of movement within the composition, guiding the eye through the arrangement of leaves and cones. The growth pattern creates a sense of natural dynamism characteristic of climbing plants. The work is developed through subtle variations of green and their tonal relationships. The cones are rendered with attention to their botanical structure, reinforcing a sense of authenticity.

Rhyncattleanthe Burana Beauty is a hybrid created not for rarity, but for visual impact. It has a well-composed flower form: the petals maintain a clear rhythm, while the lip remains a strong focal point, allowing the plant to be easily perceived from a distance—especially in an exhibition setting. The yellow color of this variety is warm and rich, with a sense of inner light. Even under artificial lighting, the flower does not lose its depth and continues to appear vibrant and alive. The pseudobulbs of this hybrid are dense and well-formed, emphasizing its vigorous growth and giving the plant a distinct character. This variety combines strength and lightness, making the flower appear both powerful and elegant.

In this watercolor piece featuring the rare Clathrus ruber, my goal was to capture its ephemeral, almost alien beauty and intricate latticework. I also wanted to illustrate its miraculous emergence into the world—a truly incredible creation of nature. I focused on rendering the complex textures and the stark contrast between the vibrant red 'cage' and the rough, grey protective peridium from which it sprouts. The painting is executed on 100% cotton Sanders Waterford paper by St Cuthberts Mill (300gsm, Hot Pressed).

This watercolor painting of Clathrus archeri is a personal exploration of nature's dramatic cycle. My aim was to capture its unique lifecycle, from the emerging red tentacles breaking through the protective peridium to the fully unfurled, vibrant red arms with dark gleba. I meticulously focused on textures: smooth red arms, dark mucus and the detailed form of the bird skull nestled at its base, integrated as part of its ecosystem context. The piece is executed on 100% cotton Sanders Waterford paper by St Cuthberts Mill (300gsm, Hot Pressed).

This plant is a cultivar of Pittosporum tenuifolium, a species native to NZ, that was selected and propagated for its distinctive variegated foliage. The rounded, wavy-margined leaves open white, then becoming dark green, speckled and mottled between the veins with white, often tinged pink in winter. The tiny, fragrant and deep chocolate-purple flowers are produced rather sparsely from late spring. We have this mature shrub in the garden and I have always found the contrast between the white-green foliage and the dark purple flowers a very attractive colour combination.

Maori potatoes (Taewa) - Solanum tuberosum by birgit rhode

h: 52 w: 65 d: 1 (cms).
Early explorers, sealers and whalers introduced potatoes (originating from the Andes in South America) to NZ in the 18th century. By 1800 and before European settlement, potatoes had become a staple food for Maori but were also used as a commercial crop. Maori potatoes are hardy and disease resistant. However, they produce fewer tubers which are also smaller and more knobbly with more deep-seated eyes than modern potato varieties. Testing has revealed their considerable nutritional benefits: they contain more antioxidants than modern potatoes, are richer in essential amino acids, minerals and anthocyanins, and the skins of all tested taewa cultivars are higher in protein, fat, minerals, and dietary fibre. I chose Maori potatoes as a subject because of their intriguing shapes and colours. I also wanted to portray them in a traditional kete (woven basket) as a nod to the part Maori cultivation played in preserving these original potato varieties.

My painting "Purple Dendrobium Orchid" depicts a Dendrobium species commonly found throughout Thailand and easily accessible in both rural areas and major cities. I am drawn to its simplicity and the striking presence of its purple hues. The elegant, flowing curves of the plant are carefully observed and rendered from a real specimen that I purchased from a local orchid market near my home. Through this piece, I aim to illustrate the life cycle of the orchid, capturing its gradual development , from the exposed roots, to the emerging buds, and finally to the fully blossomed flowers.

My painting of the Etlingera elatior (Torch Ginger ) captures the bold colours and intricate structure of this tropical plant. The composition includes different stages of the plant, from the roots to the budding flower, full bloom, and seed head, offering a complete view of its life cycle. I have always been drawn to the Torch Ginger’s striking structure and colours. The flower is not only visually captivating but also used in traditional cooking.

"Three oaks" (Latin: Quércus álba, Quércus rúbra, Quércus róbur). I’d held a long-standing ambition to draw three oaks, but the one detail missing was a white oak acorn. As far as I know, the last time the tree in the St Petersburg Botanical Garden fruited was back in the 1960s, so I finally decided to begin the artwork without it. Then, quite miraculously, while walking in the Botanical Garden, I spotted acorns on the white oak! It had decided to fruit that very year, and I was lucky enough to see a white oak acorn in person and finally draw it.

The pomme d’Api is one of the oldest varieties of apples, said to date from Roman times. Some researchers contend that Appius Claudius, the Roman censor who built the Appian Way in the third century BCE, brought the apple to France. But most French botanists believe it originated in the ancient Forest of Api in Brittany. It is a small “winter” apple and when fully ripe has bright red cheeks on a pale green-yellow background. This apple ripens in November, keeps well even at room temperature, and is often used for Christmas decorations. A fancy dessert apple, it is highly aromatic and makes delicious cider. Back in time, the ladies of the king’s court would carry the small apple in their purses for use as a breath freshener. In fall 2024, I had the opportunity to get some cuttings from a pomme d’Api tree in an heirloom apple orchard in Nova Scotia, Canada. I was very excited to illustrate this variety of apple, and combine the different elements to create a pleasing composition.

Rhododendron - Black Pearl” - from Knowsley Hall’s own ‘American Gardens’ Collection Original watercolour on Arches Smooth paper. Part of a series of paintings as 'artist in residence' at Knowsley Hall for the Countess of Derby. 'Rhododendron Black Pearl' is part of a collection of works depicting heritage botanicals at Knowsley Hall. The piece is painted as part of my residency at Knowsley Hall estate to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the year of the birth of the 13th Earl of Derby and his significant contribution to natural history, including his patronage of artist Edward Lear. The ‘American Garden’ at Knowsley Hall hosts a truly significant collection of Rhododendron specimens. Set against the moving backdrop of the original aviaries and impressive walled gardens, a varied collection of Rhododendrons can be found. Walking amongst these for the very first time was awe-inspiring, with far too many to choose from, that was until I chanced upon the Black Pearl!

Commissioned by the Universidad Católica de Cuenca, this work contributes to the re-edition of the 1911 classic, Enumeración Botánica de Luis Cordero. While the original publication holds immense historical weight, this new edition marks a milestone in Ecuadorian science and art: integrating modern botanical revisions and, for the first time, featuring the work of Ecuadorian botanical illustrators. Among the plants featured in this edition is Cleome anomala, an herbaceous shrub reaching heights of 3 to 4 meters. Found within the moist montane forests of Ecuador—often tucked away in ravines or forest gaps—it is a modest plant that easily blends into the verdant vegetation. However, it reveals its splendour through its striking inflorescences, characterized by long, vibrant purple anthers that gracefully protrude, demanding the viewer’s attention. The specimen from the illustration was observed within the Pasochoa forest reserve, near Quito, Ecuador.

A member of the Loranthaceae family and a relative of the common mistletoe, this hemiparasitic plant belongs to the genus Tristerix—a group endemic to the Andes, stretching from Colombia to Argentina. This resilient species thrives at elevations up to 4,000 meters above sea level, anchoring itself to the shrubs and small trees of the high-altitude paramos. Known locally as “mingari” or “fosforitos” ("little matches"), the plant is integrated into local tradition for its medicinal properties. Its ecological role is equally vital: its vibrant flowers are a nectar source for high-altitude hummingbirds, while its fruits sustain various bird species that, in turn, serve as the primary agents for seed dispersal. The specimen from the illustration was observed in the surroundings of Mojanda lake, Imbabura, Ecuador.

This work depicts Pancratium maritimum across different stages of its life cycle, from flowering to fruiting and seed dispersal. Particular attention is given to the natural senescence of the strap-like leaves, shown collapsing onto the sandy substrate typical of its coastal habitat. The composition aims at bringing together observation and interpretation, reflecting the plant’s adaptation to a harsh coastal environment.

I am very much taken with the self-sown honeysuckles in my garden; Lonicera periclymenum, Lonicera japonica and Lonicera fragrentissima. Last year I enjoyed drawing and painting several versions of all three plants as the seasons changed. It was interesting to observe them develop, similar in some ways and different in other. I was captivated by the sturdy yet graceful bends of the Lonicera periclymenum which I was keen to capture in pen and ink. The wonderful colours of the flowers and the berries are asking for me to get out my watercolours this year.

This work explores the castor plant Ricinus communis, known for its bold leaves and delicate flowering structure. I was drawn to the contrast between its broad, structured form and the finer details within the plant. Through close observation, I focused on light, tone, and texture to reveal its form and presence. Light plays an important role in expressing its depth and quiet vitality.
