Sterling Silver
h: 30 w: 15 d: 15 (cms).
A masterpiece of craftsmanship meticulously handcrafted from sterling silver sheet and wire, the exquisite sterling silver Flower Bouqet. Delicately hand-pierced with precision, each petal is formed in layers and expertly shaped into a graceful, bowl-like contour using traditional doming techniques. This careful process breathes life into the petals, inspiring them with a natural elegance. Crafting these flowers demands time, patience, and unwavering dedication to achieving a flawless finish. Wire is skilfully heated and delicately shaped into gleaming spheres to create the flower centres. Then the blossom flower are soldered to a gracefully tapered silver wire, the stem, adding to the flower’s lifelike beauty. Each Flower as unique as the real thing.

The Botanical life of Pumpkin - from Seed to Harvest by carol wong
The Botanical life of Pumpkin - from Seed to Harvest by carol wong

By carol wong
Watercolor
h: 30 w: 40 d: 1 (cms).
My goal was to illustrate the complete growth cycle of a pumpkin in a single image—showing the seeds, leaves, flowers, and fruit. To truly understand the process, I grew the pumpkin myself and carefully documented each stage through photographs, sketches, and color studies. The artwork is created at a 1:1 scale. I measured every part of the plant precisely and drew it at its actual size to capture its true essence. This project took me about a year and a half to complete. I thoroughly enjoyed every step, from close observation and recording to sketching and coloring. It was also a valuable lesson in patience, as I waited for the plant to grow andthoughtfully decided which elements to include within the limited space of the composition. Through this piece, I hope to share not only the beauty of the pumpkin’s life cycle, but also the quiet joy that comes from slowing down, observing nature, and honoring its details with care.

A poppy capsule, in which thousands of seeds have ripened, now opens to release its contents to the world. Each seed carries new potential and the possibility of life – ready to continue the cycle that began with growth, flowering, and ripening. This native North American plant grows in my garden in Fitzroy Harbour, Ontario, Canada. My work illustrates the growing stages of this hardy perennial plant: spring-time embryonic buds, emerging spikes of pea-shaped flowers that attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds in summer, and fresh green seed pods that turn a deep blue-black and lose their seeds in the fall.

This work presents a curated selection of wildflowers that grow on Hallasan Mountain, the highest peak on Jeju Island. Focusing on species that thrive across varying elevations, the series documents their forms, colors, and textures within the mountain’s distinctive ecological environment. The volcanic landscape, shifting climate conditions, and elevation gradients shape a diverse habitat where each species reflects adaptation and resilience. Through detailed observation and high-resolution imagery, the work explores the relationship between plant life and terrain, combining artistic composition with botanical study. The series aims to highlight the ecological richness of Hallasan while preserving the quiet beauty of its native wildflowers in a visual narrative.

During my walks through the dunes, I noticed a delicate tapestry of tiny herbs woven into the sand. At first glance they looked rather unusual, with their large collars of leaves holding clusters of small white flowers. It is a modest little plant, easily overlooked by those who pass by too quickly. But when you pause and look closer, a quiet beauty reveals itself. When I looked it up, I discovered it was purslane (Dutch: postelein). The name immediately brought back warm memories of my grandparents. They used to make soup from purslane — simple, comforting, and full of flavor. The painting shows the purslane after a rain shower. The droplets are still on the leaves. Some of the leaves have wilted, others are still fresh. You see a small snail enjoying her lunch. Although the plant is mainly green, I liked the "50 shades of green" a lot.

Artist Susannah Blaxill generously gifted me Rory McEwen vellum, inspiring me to paint the intricate tessellated tepals of Fritillaria meleagris, a genus Rory loved. During my five-week residency, I enjoyed uninterrupted creative time in the sunroom, visited by wildlife and fellow botanical artists Beverly Allen, Carol Woodin, and Jean Emmons. I completed the painting after returning to Australia, timing it with the southern winter bloom. Working on gessoed vellum was challenging, requiring careful sanding with fine jeweller’s sandpaper, a tip from colleague Mali Moir.

I was inspired to paint this piece after my mother experienced a serious health issue. The dried daffodils on my desk, past their prime, symbolise the natural cycle of life. Their withered petals just like the wrinkles on one’s face; they are the marks of time, the imprints left by life. Though imperfect, they are utterly real. Painting them became an act of hope, and an observation of fleeting nature.

These exotic-looking flowers are not commonly found in my local area. Native to northern Africa and southern Europe, the Arabian starflower has creamy white, star-shaped blossoms with dark green centers that transform into beautiful blooms with an intricate, ball-like appearance. This painting marks my first attempt at such a large-scale watercolor painting. For me, the most interesting part is showing the cross-section of the flower head, which reveals the secret of the striking inflorescence.

In this piece, I wanted to capture the incredible diversity of forms and textures that nature offers us. In choosing these seven leaves, I sought out contrasts: the softness of the fuzzy lamb's ear, the cool sheen of the laurel, and, of course, the bold pink accent of the croton, which became the heart of the composition. For me, this painting is more than just a botanical illustration; it is a quiet conversation with the plant world, an attempt to freeze time and appreciate the beauty in details that we often overlook in our daily haste. Below are the species featured in this composition: 1. Pulmonaria affinis Jord. 2. Pleioblastus viridistriatus (Regel) Makino 3. Prunus laurocerasus 4. Salvia officinalis 5. Stachys byzantina 6. Coleus scutellarioides (L.) Benth. 7. Codiaeum variegatum

Kigelia africana, or commonly called the Sausage tree, boasts long sprays of spectacular maroon/red velvety, wrinkled flowers that attracts birds, insects and bats. The dropped flowers are eaten by bucks and the large massive sausage like fruit is popular food for baboons and hippopotamus. It naturally only occurs in Africa, especially on riverbanks and the genus Kigelia only has this one specie. This artwork depicts the budding and open flowers seen in early spring with mature fruit from the previous season.

This piece is a study of Paphiopedilum venustum, an orchid species renowned for its unique and ornate flowers, featuring petals adorned with distinct green and purple-brown veins and spots. To capture the plant's vitality, I employed a multi-layered glazing technique, building up transparency to reflect the waxy texture of the pouch and the delicate, cilia-fringed margins of the petals. This orchid is native to the Himalayan region, including India, Nepal, and parts of Tibet. Due to habitat loss, it is rare in the wild. Through this painting, I seek to invite the viewer into the microscopic world of this orchid, highlighting the fragile balance of biodiversity in the Himalayan region.

This apple painting was created as part of Belgium’s Finest, an exhibition organised by the Association of Botanical Artists Belgium (VBKB) for Botanical Art Worldwide 2025. In the orchard Pomona Belgica, belonging to pomologist Eddy Vets, I discovered old Belgian varieties that differ greatly in shape, colour, and blossom. The aim of this work is to make people aware that there are many more varieties than those found on today’s supermarket shelves.

Musella lasiocarpa is native to China and is the only species in the genus Musella. Although it resembles a small banana, it is not a banana, even though it belongs to the same family. The arrangement of its flowers has led it to be called the golden lotus flower, comparing it to the lotus flower itself and praising its ornamental value and beauty. Therefore, in contrast, the painting depicts the moment when the Musella lasiocarpa flower begins to deteriorate, the combination of the bright yellow produced by its bloom juxtaposed with the brown tones that gradually "numb" the plant until the flower itself dies, marking that irreversible end in all living things and, at the same time, celebrating the beauty of that moment.

This artwork depicts Strobilanthes cusia. On a tranquil night, its dried capsules suddenly burst open, releasing a sound that seems to tell a tale of the plant's history with this soil. Once widely cultivated in Taiwan, it was used to extract blue dye from its stems and leaves, which was then processed into indigo for export. Today, its cultivation is a shadow of its former scale, and it has gradually faded from daily life. Thus, I chose to render the background stems and leaves as monochrome sketches, resembling a past silenced by time. In contrast, the foreground is infused with color and vitality. It exudes a vigorous life force, continuing its story and awaiting the moment when it may once again be heard.
