Ink on scratchboard
h: 51 w: 28 d: 1 (cms).
This artwork of an Australian native, Sturt's Nightshade (Solanum sturtianum) was done using scratchboard techniques on a scratchboard panel. Layers of coloured ink were added and scratched into to bring to life the attractive silvery-green foliage, delicate purple flowers and plump yellow fruit. Although it looks very similar to the edible bush tomato Solanum centrale, this is not a plant to be ingested, as it's highly poisonous to humans and animals.

This artwork of the Australian native dwarf specimen of lemon-scented ironbark (Eucalyptus staigeriana) was completed on a scratchboard panel using scratchboard techniques. This tree is one of my favourites in our garden - every January it becomes heavy with honey-scented blossoms that bring in a diverse array of pollinators from miles around!

This botanical illustration depicts the castor bean plant, carefully portraying its leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds to present the plant’s full life cycle and structural characteristics. The composition focuses on the distinctive palmate leaves, textured stems, and the spiny green fruits that contain the seeds, highlighting the unique morphology of the species. Each element has been closely observed and rendered with attention to detail, from the delicate veins of the leaves to the complex structure of the developing and mature seed pods. Additional studies of the fruit and seeds are included to illustrate the transformation from flowering to seed formation, offering a scientific as well as artistic perspective. Through this work, the artist aims to combine aesthetic beauty with botanical accuracy. By presenting the plant in a clear and informative way, the illustration invites viewers to appreciate the complexity, diversity, and subtle elegance found in the natural world. The pie

This botanical illustration depicts the hosta plant, focusing on the beauty of its structure and the stages of its growth. The composition presents not only the fully opened flowers but also the buds, the internal structure of the flower, the developing fruits, and the withered stage, illustrating the life cycle of the plant in a comprehensive way. The gently arching pink flowers capture the graceful form characteristic of hosta, while the long flower stalk and broad leaves show the plant’s balanced and elegant growth. Special attention has been given to the veins and texture of the leaves, emphasizing the natural order and vitality found in plant structures. In addition, sectional views of the flower and the developmental stages of the fruit are included to provide a clearer understanding of the plant’s reproductive process and morphological features. Through careful observation and detailed rendering, this work seeks to combine scientific accuracy with artistic expression. Ultimate

I drew Nepenthes bicalcarata to show the uniqueness of its pitcher lip, which has fangs on the top, which makes it different from most other Nepenthes species, as well as its unique inflorescence, which is clustered with more than 3 flowers in 1 branch. This Nepenthes itself is an endemic plant of the Kalimantan Islands in Indonesia. I was very fortunate to be able to observe the flowering stage of Nepenthes bicalcarata, which is very difficult to find, even when this plant under intensive care of a nursery, it is very difficult to get it to flower. Captivated by its beauty, move me to draw it with my recent favorite medium, pen on paper.

Everything is fine and harmonious in nature. Watching the processes of aging, dying and withering, you feel admiration, peace and acceptance of the natural limb of being. This rose bloomed in my autumn garden just in time for my birthday. And I couldn't leave her without attention, capturing on paper the beautiful play of shades and the delicate lace of veins on her petals.

Watercolor on paper
h: 39 w: 54 d: 1 (cms).
The paulownia tree is so tall that it’s hard to observe its details up close. Because of this, it wasn’t easy to study carefully. One day, the artist discovered a young, small paulownia sapling and began closely observing and documenting its growth over the course of about three years. The bell-shaped flowers required an extremely fine brush to capture their delicate structure and the countless tiny hairs covering them. The large leaves are depicted life-size on the back side of the illustration to convey their true scale. Some leaves are shown slightly turned over to reveal the soft, fuzzy texture on the underside. The chandelier-like arrangement of the branches, along with the hard, woody fruits and tiny seeds, are all carefully illustrated. The entire growth process of the paulownia tree is presented step by step in a beautifully balanced and harmonious composition.

Watercolor on paper
h: 39 w: 54 d: 1 (cms).
I was filming plants that are good for honey production. The horse chestnut tree is a great example of what I wanted to show as a “scientist-style” explanation. This tree is really valuable for making honey — bees love it. Its leaves are palmately compound, usually divided into five (sometimes more) leaflets, giving them a distinctive hand-like shape. The leaflets have a smooth, almost shiny surface. The flowers are very small and a pale, almost invisible white — honestly, describing tiny flowers like these is much harder than it sounds. You really need some botany knowledge to do it properly. The fruits grow in clusters inside tough, spiky green shells. People say they’re poisonous if eaten. I spent a long time carefully observing and explaining the growth stages of this tree in the garden right in front of my house. It’s definitely a job that requires a lot of patience.

This Heliconia forms a pair with my first study of the species. I acquired both plants during the traditional sell-off of flowers on the final day of the Chelsea Flower Show. It was an incredible experience to bring these rare exhibition specimens home with me. While the first Heliconia captivated me with its colour, I was fascinated here by the contrast between the rich bracts and the dry, parchment-like details that emphasize its character. Together, these two paintings remain a memory of the joyful atmosphere at the end of the show, when the beauty of the exhibits moved into my home.

Watercolor on paper
h: 30 w: 21 d: 1 (cms).
Note to organizer: Image 1 is closer to the actual work. Image 2 is the color-corrected file, optimized for printing. Artwork story: This is my second painting of the bamboo orchid. Arundina graminifolia is a ground orchid native to the Philippines and other parts of tropical and subtropical Asia, and is a prolific bloomer. Its purplish-magenta flowers shimmer in bright light, offering a striking contrast to the clean, upright lines of its grass-like leaves and stems. Unlike the flowers of epiphytic orchids, each individual bloom is short-lived. Spotting this fruiting specimen at a resort garden made it impossible not to revisit this subject, this time to capture the full cycle: tight buds, an open flower, and a developing fruit, all on one stem.

Watercolor and colored pencils on paper

Note to organizer: Image 1 is closer to the actual work. Image 2 is a color-corrected file optimized for printing. Artwork story: Dillenia luzoniensis is endemic to the Philippines, and a reliable year-round bloomer in my garden. Its bright yellow petals frame a bold red center that bees find irresistible. The petals are so delicate that they are nearly always wilted by noon. What keeps this subject worth revisiting is the sheer variety on the plant at any given moment: the deep, leathery green of mature leaves alongside the almost luminous green of new growth, with buds, blooms and open fruit often coexisting on the same branches.

This artwork presents a botanical study of a cymbidium orchid, exploring the relationship between time, structure, and fragility. The composition combines two states of the plant: a blooming branch rendered in color and a faded, graphite silhouette that suggests memory or absence. I am particularly drawn to orchids for their complex architecture and quiet resilience. In this piece, I focused on the rhythm of the stems, the tension between strength and delicacy, and the subtle tonal transitions within the petals. Through careful observation and layered technique, I aim to preserve both the botanical accuracy of the plant and its emotional presence — a fleeting moment held still.

Candelariella vitellina, Physcia aipolia, Ramalina americana, Ramalina complanate, Ramalina sinensis, Teloschistes chrysophthalmus, Teloschistes exilis, Quercus fusiformis This cluster of intertwined lichens spirals around a live oak twig enlarged 16 times. It features several common lichens of Texas Hill Country, notably the orange apothecia of the golden-eye lichen, bottom left, and the slender orange bush lichen, near the top of the cluster. Spiraling around the midground are three Ramalina species differentiated by fruiting bodies, textures, and thallus breaks. I found this specimen on the ground after a storm, upside-down from its natural growth pattern, like a tiny bouquet. The enlargement allowed me to showcase all the fantastic intricacies and peculiar characteristics of these curious organisms. It is rendered in its dry, healthy state to showcase the glaucous palette against the radiant oranges.

Ramalina celastri, Physcia aipolia, Punctelia rudecta, Teloschistes exilis, Xanthomendoza weberi, Quercus fusiformis The languid straps of this adult Ramalina celastri specimen were painted in a nearly dry state. Several broken straps indicate it had weathered some storms and dry spells. The fully grown fruiting bodies, appearing as white discs, contort with the curvature of the straps, evoking the suckers on octopus’ arms. Connected at a central point by holdfasts to a live oak twig, the fall of the straps also reminds me of Louise Bourgeois’ Maman arachnid sculpture. The juvenile straps at the tip of the twig become the spider’s fangs. I perched the specimen on an upside-down jam jar to draw it at actual size, and so the title came to be. The enlargement brings the bright, tiny tangles of Teloschistes and the bare-bottom sunburst lichen wrapped around the twig into focus.

This watercolor painting depicts a chestnut branch at the threshold of autumn, with foliage transitioning from green to golden ochre and the spiny husk opening to reveal the mature seed. The work focuses on material contrast and light behavior — from the glossy surface of the chestnut to the brittle texture of the husk and weathered leaves. Executed over approximately 70 hours, the painting employs layered transparent washes to achieve depth while preserving botanical precision. The restrained white background isolates the subject, emphasizing form, structure, and seasonal transformation. The composition references the discipline of traditional botanical studies while maintaining a contemporary minimalist sensibility.

We planted several Stargazer Lilies in our front flowerbed. Their abundant blooms and fragrance are enjoyed throughout the mid to late summer season! This painting was completed on Arches HP paper using multiple layers of transparent watercolours. Quinacridone pigments boldly brought the rich colours to life, from rosy pinks and reds to deep magentas! I really enjoyed depicting the various textures I observed.

Ilex aquifolium — a botanical watercolor on paper. The painting shows the form, texture, and color of holly, including its glossy leaves, firm structure, and bright berries. The composition highlights the natural curves of the branches and the way light plays across the plant. It combines careful observation with an artistic approach, capturing the character and unique details of the plant.

It blooms with pale pink flowers in May and bears oval-shaped fruit. By September, the fruit ripens into yellow fruit measuring about 8–15 cm in diameter. Muscari are among the first spring flowers, gently reminding us that winter is ending and nature is awakening. They mark a new beginning in the life cycle of plants, a quiet shift of seasons and moods. Like all living things, Muscari move through their own cycle: taking root, sending up shoots, forming buds, blooming, and eventually fading away to rest beneath the soil - only to return and bloom again the following year. In this work, I set out to reveal not only what meets the eye above the ground, but also the hidden part of the plant - the foundation of its life, unseen yet essential.

The illusory matter - a labyrinth of connections and symbiosis, much like the hidden harmony of lichens, where fungus and alga coexist as one. This work reflects on that delicate balance, where illusion, life and creation quietly intertwine. Oakmoss (Evernia prunastri) changes its appearance with humidity and sunlight. Even in winter, when the world turns grey and still, its greenish-turquoise labyrinths catch the eye, revealing nature’s quiet resilience and beauty.

Lotus by Sora Han
Lotus by Sora Han

watercolor on paper
h: 42 w: 30 d: 1 (cms).
Amid a dense tangle of leaves, layered and intertwined as if they had grown in quiet competition, a single white lotus rose upright above the water’s surface. Its posture was steady, almost resolute, untouched by the surrounding chaos. The leaves seemed to gather and overlap endlessly, creating a textured green maze, yet from within that thicket, the lotus emerged with remarkable clarity. What struck me most was how intensely it shone. The white was not merely pale, but luminous, catching the light in a way that made everything around it feel momentarily subdued. It did not demand attention, yet it naturally drew the eye, as if the entire scene had been arranged to frame its presence. In that brief encounter, the lotus felt less like a part of the landscape and more like a quiet declaration, revealing itself with a brilliance that lingered long after the moment had passed.

gouache on paper

The pink bougainvillea is beautiful on its own, but it becomes more compelling when it grows in abundance among its leaves. Rather than standing apart, the blossoms weave into the dense foliage, creating a sense of fullness. The green leaves form a quiet backdrop, allowing the pink to appear deeper and more vivid. As light passes through the layers, the color seems to bloom more richly. What lingers is not a single flower, but the way they gather and enhance one another. To further emphasize this depth and clarity, I worked with gouache, using its dense pigments to bring out the richness and saturation of the colors.

Devil’s Tears is a picturesque overlook on Lembongan Island, near Bali, with scenic views of sunsets and waves crashing over rocky coves. There’s always a mist of water in the air there from the crashing waves, and the wind blows it into your face. I visited this place for the first time in January of this year, when the wind and waves were particularly fierce. And there I saw the pandanus plant for the first time. It seemed to be enjoying the atmosphere, its partially dried leaves with ominous spines fluttering in the wind, rustling and glorifying the elements.

This painting is a response to a singular moment in time. ‘Sunnymead Drive…’ is one of those paintings which happen without the artist even really knowing how. An ordinary walk at an extraordinary time led to a chance encounter, and there it was. A chance encounter opened the start of a new conversation, and an exploration of understanding. A time and place never to be repeated, but remembered in memory and within a single leaf.

The first spring flowers are always special. Their zest for life and refusal to wait for more favourable conditions inspire genuine admiration. Crocuses are just like that; they have chosen to live in the here and now. They offer beauty and the first nectar for insects. Nature will yet bestow a sea of colour and a variety of forms, but it is these simple, unpretentious flowers that bring the first delight to all who have been eagerly awaiting the first blossoms, the first breath of spring.

Tiliacora triandra, Yanang is a local medicinal plant widely found in Thai home gardens. It is a versatile ingredient used in traditional Thai cuisine and herbal medicine for its various health benefits. The artistic allure of Yanang lies in the vibrant diversity of its ripening process. The berries do not mature simultaneously, creating a stunning natural gradient that transitions from vivid green and yellow to warm orange and deep red. ?To capture this biological phenomenon, I employed a layering technique. By meticulously building up translucent washes of color, I was able to mimic the organic transformation of the fruit, reflecting the authentic transition of life found in nature.

The composition combines a longitudinal section of a fully opened bloom with studies of buds and individual floral parts, highlighting the transformation from bud to blossom. Kale or leaf cabbage is usually grown for its edible leaves, as a 'superfood' crop that can withstand harsh weather, and provide greens over-winter. The variety 'Frost Byte' has marked white veins to its ruffled leaves, and once temperatures fall below 5 degrees C, the new growth is white, contrasting with the outer leaves. Painted using Winsor and Newton, sennelier and MaimeriBlu watercolours on Saunders Waterford High white HP 640gsm paper.

Colored pencils and archival ink on paper
h: 40 w: 30 d: 1 (cms).
This work explores the natural process of ripening in Rubus idaeus, bringing together different stages of development within a single composition. From blossom to mature and overripe fruit, the plant is observed in its quiet transformation. Particular attention is given to the structure of leaves and the subtle shifts in tone and colour, allowing depth to emerge through contrast between detailed foreground and softened background elements. The aim is to present the plant truthfully, without idealisation, revealing beauty in its natural, imperfect state.
